"PowerBoat-Reports" Article:

"The water your boat floats in has waves. The water that winds up inside your boat, as a result of rain, leaky packing, and so on, is a messy nuisance. The Smart Pump makes use of the former to deal with the latter.

The Smart Pump consists of a steel frame made of polyethylene-coated steel that you tie on to your boat. Mounted on the framework is a piston-type pump that's actuated by a 9" diameter PVC tubing with a screened strainer at the end. The strainer goes into the bilge; the body of the pump moves with the boat; the piston's attached to the float which stays on the surface of the water. When the boat rocks and/or waves appear on the water's surface, the piston moves up and down, and the pump pumps.

Compared to the usual battery-powered bilge pump, the Smart Pump's throughput is puny; the manufacturer claims up to 15 gallons per hour (a number which our tests support). On the other hand, the Smart Pump won't run down your batteries, and 15 gph should be much more than you need for almost any rain or slow leak you're apt to encounter at a dock or mooring. The Smart Pump will work nicely on tenders and dinghies that don't have batteries, and normally don't have bilge pumps.

Construction of the Smart Pump appears to be first class; all materials are of marine quality, and the workmanship and finish are good. The pump is self-priming up to 5-1/2 feet, which is more than the hose provided will handle; in any case it should be fine for most small craft. It's quite tolerant of oil, cleaning products and other contaminants that may show up in the bilge; the screened input should take care of sand and other solids that might be present.

...the Smart Pump is a reasonably-priced device that should give years of service. And stimulate lots of dockside conversation. Contact ... 800/350-0564 "
