"Some inflatable boats and larger craft with unreliable batteries are poor candidates for automatic bilge pumps. And on older boats the pump may have problems, such as a clogging intake or a stuck float switch. If you're worried about your pumpless boat, check out the Smart Pump. This wave-activated, battery-free unit doesn't move a lot of water - just 7.6 gph on average, or up to 15 gph when waves are larger than usual. Smart Pump has a screened intake and hose that connects the pumping unit, which you hang over the side of your boat. As your boat rocks, a float is forced up and down, providing pumping power.
I tested the Smart Pump on my 16-footer. Without wave action to power the float, the unit didn't pull up enough water to prime itself. But when I rocked the boat a couple of times the unit self-primed and started pumping ... Contact JR's Supplies at 800/350-0564. --Lenny Rudow"
